April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month: Don’t Skip Your Screening
March 28, 2023
As a dentist, I strongly believe in the importance of oral cancer screenings for all of my patients. With April being Oral Cancer Awareness Month, it’s the perfect time to discuss this important topic.
Oral cancer is a serious and potentially life-threatening disease that affects thousands of people every year. Early detection is crucial in treating oral cancer, which is why regular screenings are so important. At our dental office, we perform oral cancer screenings as part of our routine dental check-ups.
During an oral cancer screening, we will examine your mouth, tongue, and throat for any signs of abnormalities, including red or white patches, sores that won’t heal, or lumps and bumps. If we do detect any abnormalities during a screening, we may recommend further testing or refer you to a specialist for additional evaluation. Treatment for oral cancer typically involves a combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. The earlier the cancer is detected, the better the chances of successful treatment.
Prevention is also key in reducing your risk of oral cancer. Quitting smoking or using other tobacco products, limiting alcohol consumption, and protecting your lips from sun exposure are all important steps you can take to reduce your risk. Additionally, maintaining good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups can help detect any abnormalities early on.
While we recommend regular dental check-ups for oral cancer screenings, it’s also important to monitor your own oral health at home. Be aware of any changes in your mouth, including sores or lesions that don’t heal, changes in the color or texture of your mouth tissues, and any persistent pain or discomfort.
